Maze
Arcades are built around visual interaction, making them difficult for people with visual impairments to enjoy independently. This project explores how tactile and auditory feedback can transform a traditional arcade game into an inclusive experience that empowers visually impaired players to play without assistance.


Why Arcade Games ?
We were asked to redesign an experience around a personal hobby. Having always enjoyed arcade games, I wanted to explore how the same excitement could be made accessible to players with visual impairments.

Problem


The Problem
Most arcade games are designed around visual interaction, making independent play difficult for people with visual impairments. Existing accessible alternatives are primarily digital, leaving little opportunity for an inclusive physical arcade experience.

Prototype evolution
The first prototype explored the core gameplay and interaction using a simple cardboard maze. After initial testing, joystick controls powered by Arduino and servo motors were introduced, allowing the maze to be tilted just like a traditional arcade game.

Building on the first iteration, the maze was reconstructed with improved materials and a more polished form while retaining the same joystick-controlled mechanism. This iteration focused on enhancing durability, usability, and the overall play experience.

The final prototype was developed as a full-scale simulation to visualize the game in an actual arcade setting. Suspended from above, it demonstrated the intended size, interaction, and accessibility of the concept, bringing the experience closer to a real-world installation.
